Update 10-21-23

The Potash industry has been the backbone of our community since 1929, and the industry’s generosity continues. Originally, potash was discovered in southeastern New Mexico in 1925 during drilling for oil and gas. Currently, Carlsbad has two large mines, owned by Intrepid Potash and Mosaic. Carlsbad also accounts for more than 75 percent of the potash production in the US and has produced steady employment for nearly a century.

The potash industry’s success has created a well-maintained community partnership. Every year, Intrepid and Mosaic hold a “Potash Open”, a golf tournament that raises money to donate to local charities. This tournament is one of the largest and most recognizable golfing events, attracting participants and contributors from all around the nation. This year’s event was no exception, as $112,447 was donated to various charities and organizations.

The list of recipients includes Packs for Hunger, Carlsbad Prep Academy, Classical Conversations, Time for America Ministries, Christian Women’s Job Core, The Blessing, American Legion, CARC Inc. and Noah’s Ark, Faith Hope and Love, United Way of Eddy County, Christmas Anonymous, Special Olympics, Connected Academy, the Carlsbad Battered Families Shelter, Assistance League, LifeHouse, the CHS Golf Team and the CHS Swim Team.
