Update 12-12-23

If you are doing some extra Christmas shopping, don’t forget that a very special store is open at the model home located at 3816 Pat Garrett Street (in Oasis Model Homes) This is a Christmas store owned and operated by Sheila Walterscheid and family members. The small store has lots of candles and gifts on display. All proceeds from “Madison’s Christmas Store” go to support Madison’s Park.

Madison was only 14 months old when the community lost her in a tragic accident in 2014. Out of the terrible tragedy, family members have been working hard to develop a beautiful park in the subdivision.

The idea for the park was created when Walterscheid Trucking and Farms wanted to subdivide and create the new subdivision. It was suggested that a parcel of the land where houses couldn’t be built be turned into a park. Sheila, Madison’s grandmother, began to develop a vision for a “place where children could chase butterflies and families could come together and make lasting memories.”

Phase one of the park will include walking trails benches, playground equipment and a large grass field. Phase two will include a splash pad, while phase three will include a basketball court, pickleball court and workout equipment. Purchases at the Christmas store go toward making this vision a reality.

Thanks again to Ricky and Bellzora Garcia for holding their Cavemen Strong event in Carlsbad last week and for recognizing so many outstanding citizens. We were happy to proclaim Dec. 7, 2023, to be “Ricky and Bellzora Garcia Day” in their honor. It was a great event, and we especially enjoyed seeing Jimmy Fuson selected as the “comeback kid” and Judi Waters being recognized as the citizen of the year.  The Early College High School Choir, the CHS Cheerleaders and the CHS Jazz Band all helped make the event special.

Congratulations again to Ryan Kinnikin, Brandon Lee and Orlando Moreno, who were honored as first responders, as well as Audrey Paige Neumann, Macie Marie Stephens and Gavin York, who were honored as outstanding students.  We were once again honored to be able to recognize five outstanding retired educators- Sally Covington, Karen Gentry, Janet Cunningham, Lindsay Garza, and George Frederick. We know Ricky and Bellzora will continue to find ways to support Carlsbad, and we appreciate hearing more about what they do.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
