Update 12-11-23

Congratulations to the five new cadets with the Carlsbad Police Department, who recently graduated from the Southeastern New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Class A-23-50. The cadets will now embark on the field training phase within the Department. Carlsbad officers took home three of the five major awards presented during the class.

The cadets were Austin Naylor, Tyson Cisneros, Omar Lopez, Cesar Diaz and Yahir Perez. Naylor won the driving award and was selected as the distinguished graduate. Omar Lopez won the Physical Fitness award. We’re very excited about the future of the Carlsbad Police Department.

We’ll be having a graduation of our own this week – this will be our last Mayor’s Student Advisory meeting during my term in office. This committee, which usually consists of Carlsbad kids from sixth grade up, has been meeting for years. In fact, some of the students on the committee this year were with us when we first opened the Carlsbad Water Park. This year, the students helped us brainstorm before the opening of our new miniature golf course. They also asked great questions during a visit to the public works department last month. This week, members of the student advisory committee will be introduced before the Carlsbad City Council at our meeting on Tuesday night. This has been a great program, and we hope it will continue throughout future administrations. We thank these students, and their parents, for being such outstanding participants.

Don’t forget that the Riverwalk Recreation Center’s annual Christmas Party will run from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13. R360 is sponsoring the event. If you haven’t heard of R360, they are one of the most generous companies you’ll ever meet. Every year, the company supports numerous Christmas projects and donates toys, bikes and more all across the area. R360 has also been our title sponsor for our Independence Day celebration for many years. Of course, our Riverwalk Recreation Center employees are all outstanding, and they outdo themselves every year with this party and many other activities. We hope to see you at the Riverwalk Recreation Center on Wednesday evening.

There’s a new business in town called the Party Shack, and it is located at 606 West Greene Street. According to advertisements, the Shack is a great place for birthday parties, graduations, and other events. The venue includes coin-operated arcade games, shuffleboard, a pool table, foosball and other fun activities. For more information, please call (575) 887-7210 or visit the location’s Facebook page.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
