Update 11-22-23

We’re pleased to learn that Carlsbad Caverns National Park will again offer visitors the opportunity to go on the Rock of Ages Lantern Tours in December.

This annual tradition will focus on some of key historic community members, guests, and staff who have helped turn the national park into a world renown destination.

Tour dates are Dec. 1-2, 6,8-9, 13 15-16, 20 and 22-23. The time runs from 5-7 p.m. and the cost is $15 per person. Each tour is limited to 24 people. Tickets may be purchased by calling (575) 236-1375.

Ranger-led tours of the cavern historically gathered at the Rock of Ages stalagmite, where park rangers would sing the “Rock of Ages” hymn during a blackout. This is a great way to wrap up the centennial celebration at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Congratulations again to Carmen Chapin and everyone with the park on a successful celebration.

A few quick reminders: The solid waste department will be closed on Nov. 23, as will the convenience station and the Sandpoint Landfill. Thursday’s normally scheduled trash pickup will take place on Friday, and Friday’s regular pickup will take place on Saturday. Regular schedules and hours will resume on Nov. 27. Thank you to all of the members of our solid waste department, who always work unusual hours to get the job done.

As mentioned before, the Carlsbad Arts Council will be hosting Night of Lights on Nov. 25 at the Halagueno Arts Park. The following areas will be blocked off from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., Halagueno St between Fox/Mermod, Fox St. between Halagueno/Alameda, and Mermod between Canal/Alameda.

The Electric Light Parade will begin at 7 p.m. that night. Parade assembly for participants will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Mermod and Alameda, the corner of Canyon and Mermod will be blocked off. The parade will begin at Mermod/Alameda, go down Mermod, take a left-on Canyon St, turn right onto Church St, and make a left onto Park Dr., where it will end at the beach parking lot. We hope you’ll join us at all of these wonderful events.

We’ve received a lot of positive feedback about the new National Guitar Museum exhibit at the Carlsbad Museum. ‘America at the Crossroads: The GUITAR And A Changing Nation’! will be on display until Jan. 20. Please go check it out.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
