Mayor’s Update 11-2-23

The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee is in the process of setting up its annual event. This year’s celebration will include a fundraiser dinner, a worship service and a march in mid January. Last year’s dinner drew a record attendance, and the organization expects a high attendance again this year. The annual march from the Eddy County Courthouse to Martin Luther King Jr. Park is a very positive community event.

The organization is also proud to announce that the MLK Prayer Breakfast has returned.

This year’s breakfast will be at 9 a.m. Dec. 2 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Pastor John Burke will be the speaker, and his topic will be “Living the Dream.” We hope you’ll show your support for the outstanding MLK organization by attending this breakfast and the many events in January. The primary purpose of the MLK Committee is to provide scholarships and support other educational endeavors. Captain James and Julia Williams helped found the effort, and Julia is still highly involved. Dr. Joy James-Foster is the organization’s president and does a great job.

Stay tuned for more details about the MLK activities in January, but we appreciate all of this organization’s hard work.

Please don’t forget that the City of Carlsbad will be inducting Admiral Wertheim into the hall of fame this weekend. That ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Carlsbad Museum.  Local attorney Jeff Diamond first nominated Wertheim for this recognition, and he will be part of the ceremony. Additionally, members of Wertheim’s family will be joining us, as will senior staff members from the New Mexico Military Institute.

Additionally, the City will be part of the Veteran’s Day celebration on Nov. 11. A parade will begin at 10 a.m. and run from the school administration building to the Veterans Memorial Park, where a short ceremony will take place. Thank you to Alberto Villegas and everyone with the Eddy County Patriotic Society for organizing this event.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
