Sunday Update 10-29-23

We hope everyone in our community has a fun, safe Halloween or fall festival celebration. Door to door ‘Trick or Treat night’ in Carlsbad will remain on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Also on Oct. 31, the Carlsbad Police Department and Carlsbad Fire Department are holding a Trunk or Treat at 5 p.m. at Fire Station 1 (on the 400 block of Halagueno). Carlsbad MainStreet will be holding its fall festival from 4-6 p.m. on Oct. 31

The 28th annual Fall Festival will have a superhero theme this year. Costume contest registration will be from 4:15-5 p.m. at the judges table on the courthouse lawn, and the contest will begin at 5:15 p.m. Devon Energy and Intrepid Potash sponsored this year’s activities. For those of you new to town, this event usually draws a large crowd.

There are many other fall events going on this week, including church activities, school carnivals and area businesses holding events. One of the best ways to get a good rundown of everything is to visit Carlsbad’s “Hometown Holidays” page on Facebook. If you are seeing this column before the weekend, don’t forget that the “Paddle on the Pecos” takes place on Saturday at the Carlsbad Beach. This very well organized event drew a lot of attention last year.

Next up is Veterans Day. This year’s Veterans Day parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Nov. 11 and run from the school administration building to Veterans Park on James Street. There will be a short ceremony honoring our veterans at the park. We didn’t get to use the Veterans Park last year due to construction on the Bataan Bridge, so we’re excited to be back.  We understand that Adrian Rodriguez will be serving as this year’s keynote speaker. I am honored to have been invited to say a few words at the Veterans Day ceremony and to thank our veterans.

Thank you to Alberto Villegas and all members of the Eddy County Patriotic Society who work hard every year to put together our Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day ceremonies. Our Veterans Park is also a beautiful location and the parks committee members are working on several additional projects. We will be posting a flyer soon with information about the parade and ceremony. There’s no registration required to participate in the parade, but the organizers do ask that everyone be respectful of the fact that this is a ceremony honoring veterans.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
