Update 10-16-23 (Wednesday)

We’re just a day away from our 11th energy summit, which will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday at the civic center.

This will be the final summit during my time as mayor, and we want to go out with the biggest and best event we’ve ever had. We hope you’ll come join us. Even if you haven’t registered, attendance is free and we will find space until we run out.

As announced, former Dallas Cowboy Drew Pearson will be joining us this year, as will mixed martial artist Holly Holm. We’ll have free steak lunches prepared by Lynne and Kimberly Ballard and present our “Spirit of the Workforce” awards. This was all made possible thanks to 34 sponsors and another 10 in-kind sponsors. NMOGA’s president and CEO Missi Currier will be our master of ceremonies. We will be hearing from NMOGA and the BLM.

We are excited about our panel discussions, which will address important topics such as produced water, economic diversity and education. We are especially excited about our “newcomer’s panel,” in which we welcome new businesses to Carlsbad. Our list of outstanding panelists includes Sec. Jeff Witte with the state’s department of agriculture and Intrepid President Bob Jornayvaz III, among many others.

We had our first energy summit back in 2013 because we wanted to create an opportunity where the residents of Carlsbad could learn more about what is going on in the area. We wanted to create an opportunity to greet the leaders of companies invested in our community and let them know that they are very welcome here and that we are happy to help however we can.

For this energy summit, we’re circling back to where we started for the very first year and asking everyone to take a second look at Carlsbad.  We believe, very strongly, that there is something special about this community. Something that brings people here and something that inspires them to stay here.

Of course, a big part of that is the Delaware Basin and its rich oil and gas reserves, but potash, agriculture and the nuclear industry are all also very important, as is tourism. More than anything, what’s special about Carlsbad is the people here.

We’ve seen so much growth over the past 14 years, and Carlsbad has an outstanding mix of people who have been here all our lives and people who have recently arrived. We look forward to seeing members of both groups at this year’s energy summit.

Sincerely, Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
