Update 10-12-23

There’s a new program that will provide more books to children. According to a press release, Carlsbad Municipal Schools has partnered with a program called “Kids Read Now,” an organization that mails new books to students throughout the year and summer. Books will be mailed directly to students’ home addresses. Students will receive a book they selected every two to three weeks.

The ninth book consists of creative writing prompts and will conclude the summer 2024 program, encouraging children to write their own stories. The program is designed for children ages kindergarten through fifth grade. We believe you will learn more about this program through the school district itself.

Kids Read Now is a nonprofit organization with a mission of closing achievement gaps through literacy. For more information about this program, please visit kidsreadnow.org. The City of Carlsbad supports this and all efforts to encourage literacy in our community.

Carlsbad’s Inspired By Science group is hosting a Solar Eclipse Watch Party at the National Cave and Karst Research Institute on Oct. 14 from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Carlsbad is very close to the path of the solar eclipse, and this will offer an opportunity to safely view the eclipse through a telescope with a solar filter.

While supplies last, Inspired By Science will also be handing out eclipse viewers and helping families build solar cars. There will also be food trucks and community education tables on hand. The National Cave and Karst Research Institute is located at 400-1 Cascades Avenue, near the Carlsbad Beach.

Thanks again to Deena Antiporda and the great group of Inspired By Science volunteers who make this event possible.

Inspired by Science will also be one of 23 booths on display as the Carlsbad Energy Summit, and there will be several more science-themed booths there as well. The Desert Willow Wildlife Rehab Center will have an outdoor display. Students from the Energy Resource Pathway will have a table set up at the summit where several of their projects will be on demonstration.

Another very interesting booth setting up a display is called “We Are Not Forgotten” which is hosted by Aris Water. This is a nonprofit group that supports veterans. You can learn more about this organization at wanf.org.

If you haven’t already, please register to attend the energy summit at www.carlsbadenergysummit.com so you can check out these displays and many others.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
