September 20, 2023 (SUNDAY UPDATE)

The second Cavern City Renaissance Festival will be coming up this weekend (Sept. 29 and 30) at the Carlsbad Beach. This event is organized by a group of local residents, including Shay and Marin Gregory, who decided they wanted to see such an event in Carlsbad after visiting other festivals. Nobody knew what to expect with last year’s event, but it sold 4,000 tickets and was incredibly successful and well organized.

This year’s event will be even bigger and include more food trucks, more shopping vendors and multiple breweries. There will also be activities such as archery, sword fighting and arts and crafts. To encourage it being a child-friendly event, admission for kids is free on Friday. Doors open at 4 p.m. Friday. The highlight of the event will be a 40-knight combat tournament, and there will also be music, comedy shows and professional performances. There will also be demonstrations in blacksmithing. Leatherworking and crafts. Tickets can be purchased at caverncityrenfest.com. The organizers

Events such as this are a lot of fun, but they also play a very important economic role to our area. Thousands of additional tourists will be visiting Carlsbad for this event, and we can guarantee that motel rooms will be full through the weekend. This past weekend, Hawgfest at the Sheriff’s Posse Arena and Septembeer Fest at Miltons also drew many visitors. The weekend before that, Carlsbad’s 16th of September Fiesta saw large crowds. September is a great time for events and festivals, and we appreciate all of the hardworking individuals who devote months putting these events together.

Thanks again to Shay, Marin and everyone who has worked so hard on the Cavern City Renaissance Festival over the past two years. We hope you’ll be able to make it, and we look forward to this staying an annual tradition.

Who has the best chile rellenos around? According to National Media Restaurant Surveys, that honor belongs to Mi Casita. Owner Mary Molinar was recently presented with the “Best Chile Rellenos” award following a vote by local business communities. Congratulations to everyone with Mi Casita on this well-deserved award. Mi Casita is one of my favorite places for breakfast. We also know that Florida Marlin Trevor Rogers enjoys paying the restaurant a visit when he’s in town as well.

Carlsbad is fortunate to have so many great restaurants.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
