Update 8-31-23

Don’t forget that Carlsbad’s Relay for Life is this weekend. Organized by Angela Campos and a small group of very dedicated volunteers, Relay for Life helps create awareness in the fight against cancer and raises money for the American Cancer Society. This year’s Relay will kick off at 6 p.m. Sept. 1 at the Lake Carlsbad Beach Park. Carlsbad High School’s percussion, Strut, will participate. Relay for Life will conclude at 8 a.m. Saturday.

There will be music throughout the evening, and the event will be a lot of fun. Even if you aren’t officially participating, we hope you’ll come out and show your support. Thank you to Kymera and all of the event’s sponsors.

Another big event is on the horizon. Packs for Hunger’s annual “Mayor’s Shindig” will be taking place on Oct. 14 at the BEC Building, 302 Fox Street. Doors open at 6 p.m. The event, which raises money for one of Carlsbad’s best nonprofits, will include a dinner, live auction, silent auction and raffle. The meal will be a taco fiesta. For more information, please call (575) 361-2834 or (575) 499-7137.

The City of Carlsbad is proud to support the annual Shindig. Packs for Hunger volunteers feed hundreds of Carlsbad children every single week. They often need additional volunteers too!

Carlsbad residents are celebrating the return of the La Cueva Pet Care Center, which announced that it is re-opening again on Sept. 5. This was greatly needed, as the remaining veterinarians in Carlsbad were having trouble absorbing everything when La Cueva closed earlier this year. La Cueva is located at 613 W. Pierce Street. We have been asked by members of the public numerous times to help with this issue, and we’re glad to see a business step up to assist. For more information, please call (575) 885-0021.

We have been informed that the Current-Argus will begin running our updates once a week, beginning next week. We began submitting these on an almost daily basis in the middle of the COVID-19 shutdowns as a way of telling everyone what was going on, since there were so many unexpected changes. Once we’ve moved out of the COVID era, we began to focus on a variety of other community events. We appreciate the Current-Argus’ partnership with us for the past few years.

There’s still a lot to share about our community, so we will continue to share more frequent community updates on the City’s Facebook page and web page.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
