16th of September Celebration Approaching

Carlsbad’s 16th of September is just around the corner, and a group of volunteers are working to develop a celebration that is bigger than ever. Organizer Maelene Soto says one of the biggest additions to this year’s event is that there will be an annual Fiesta Queen again.

Soto’s organization has set up the “Carlsbad September Fiestas” for 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the beach bandshell. That will be after a Fiestas parade takes place and runs from the Carlsbad Prep Academy to Church Street. There are a host of sponsors helping, and the Carlsbad Community Foundation is assisting.

This year’s event will feature live performances from Mariachi and Folklorico bands from around the area, as well as a dance, bouncy house, foam cannons and more. All of the youth games and activities will be free, thanks to the sponsors. The Fiesta Queen candidates are currently holding fundraisers in support of local nonprofits. They’ll participate in the parade and be introduced at the event. There will also be many more vendors this year, Soto said. The committee organizing this event has been meeting all year to prepare.

Many Carlsbad families have fond memories of participating in the Fiestas celebration as children, and we appreciate all of the hard work going into this event. Many of the volunteers in this group have a long tradition of supporting the annual Fiesta. Carlsbad needs more space for events and meetings, and a local couple is stepping up to meet that need. Danelle Morrill and Lucas Middleton are developing a business called The Valley Venue that can be rentable for weddings and other events. Many of you know Morrill as a science teacher and volleyball coach, and Middleton as the owner of Milton’s Brewing.

Construction of this facility is ongoing and should be done by next summer. The property is located amidst a grove of pecan trees, allowing visitors a little privacy. For more information, please visit https://www.thevvnm.com/. Congratulations to these two business owners, and thank you for working to meet a major need in Carlsbad!

Thanks again to Carlsbad MainStreet for adding a special Farmer’s Market on Saturday from 8-10 a.m. This will allow those who grow vegetables or produce homemade goods another great chance to sell their products.

You can find a vendor form on the website https://www.carlsbadmainstreet.com/events or contact 575-628-3768.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
