Update 8-21

Thank you to everyone who participated in a great Homecoming parade on Monday night. We especially enjoyed seeing all of the vehicles with members of the Homecoming Court for both Carlsbad High School as well as the Early College High School. Thanks as always to members of the band and color guard, who were the only ones walking in the parade and did a great job.

There were also some very creative floats this year. The weather was cooperative until the very end of the parade, when a storm hit. Thankfully, all of the vehicles participating were able to safely navigate the weather, and we’ve received no reports of injury. The timing of the weather wasn’t ideal, but we always appreciate a little rain. Most schools also have special dress up days going on all week in celebration of Homecoming week. The winners of the Homecoming court vote will be announced at Friday’s football game. The Cavemen host Goddard at 7 p.m.

Don’t forget that the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee and the NAACP are hosting a viewing of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech on Sunday at the beach bandshell. This viewing will take place at 7 p.m., and we hope you’ll attend to join in the viewing and discussion. Thank you to these two organizations for all that they do for the community, especially when it comes to education and scholarship. The Chamber of Commerce and City of Carlsbad are both assisting with this event as well.

Also this week, Balzano Vineyards are hosting their annual pie festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This will include a pie eating contest, pie making contest, free wine tasting, bouncy houses, a petting zoo, live music and more. The Balzano Family Vineyard is located to the north of Carlsbad, 5230 Seven Rivers Highway. Admission is $10.

The City of Carlsbad received some great news from the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration this week.  The City was informed that our application for the 2023 Federal Matching Fund was approved for $500,000. This grant, pending City Council approval, will help us meet our cash match requirement on our EDA Double Eagle Water Line Replacement Project. The Double Eagle line is very important for the future of Carlsbad, and we are completing the final phases of this project. Thank you again to everyone who helps the City with grant writing, especially Angie Testa-Barrios.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
