Update 7-27-23

When we speak to local industry groups, the need for more electricians often comes up. Both Southeast New Mexico College and Carlsbad Municipal Schools are implementing programs that will encourage people interested in becoming an electrician or other trades to do so.

To assist with this effort, an organization called the Skillpoint Alliance will be providing a free pre-apprentice electrical class at Southeast New Mexico College from Sept. 18 through Oct. 12. These classes run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The curriculum for the four-week training will cover topics such as electrical safety, device box wiring, conduit bending, and basic electrical theory. During this time,  students will also have the opportunity to gain valuable skills, including resume writing, job interviewing techniques, hands-on job training, and Osha-10 training and certification to prepare them for job opportunities.

This sounds like a great program, and we hope you’ll spread word. For more information, please visit www.skillpointalliance.org. Our energy summit this year will also include a component focused on workforce development, and we’re very excited about what it has to offer.

Congratulations to the Carlsbad National Softball team on an incredible summer. The girls concluded their run on Wednesday with a 10-2 loss to the Texas East team in the 2023 Little League Softball Southwest Region Tournament.  The girls previously lost to the Texas West Team, 4-1. Carlsbad’s girls picked up the toughest draw in the tournament, as Thursday’s final game in the Regionals will be between the two Texas teams. In fact, Carlsbad is the only team to score a run against Texas West in the tournament so far. It was a great run, and these girls should be very proud of their accomplishments.
