Update 7-25-23

We’re very excited about a couple new options adding activities to the Carlsbad area. First, the City of Carlsbad is joining in on the 100-year anniversary of the Carlsbad Caverns by hosting a scavenger hunt app that highlights all the things to do around Carlsbad.

You can participate in the Carlsbad Caverns Discovery Dash by downloading the “Scavify” app and searching for the Carlsbad Caverns Discovery Dash. You get points by participating in the dash and posting photos of certain locations around the area, or by answering certain history questions. Our great staff at the Carlsbad Museum even helped review the answers to make sure they are correct. Participants who score a certain number of points will be entered into a random drawing for a prize in December. There will be new questions added to the hunt every now and then, so please come back for some additional challenges.

Additionally, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce has restored “Cruisin on the Pecos” boat rides to the river. From now through August 27, there will be 45-minute boat rides up the Pecos River on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased by visiting www.carlsbadchamber.com. Boat rides will begin at 814 E. Riverside Drive. Rides are scheduled for 6 and 7 p.m. Friday and 5,6 and 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. This is a great activity for family members visiting for the weekend. We hope to see these rides succeed, so that the process will continue throughout the year.

Congratulations to Gil Karson and Jon Adams for a very successful performance at the summer concert series this past Saturday. Recently, Karson’s song, “Freedom Guaranteed” won the Global Music Awards in the Americana category.  The Summer Concert series is sponsored by Creed Construction, and the next performance will be Dale Mayfield on August 5.

We won’t have a summer concert series performance scheduled for this weekend, but there are a lot of activities going on at the beach. The “kNOw MORE Project” will be taking place at the beach bandshell from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is a fundraiser for the Affirming Hearts Advocacy Center, which was formerly known as the Cavern City Advocacy Center and the Foundry Home. Organizer Amy Dugas tells us that the purpose of the fundraiser is to raise $14,000. There will be fun activities at the bandshell all day as part of this effort.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
