Update 6-2-23

On top of everything else going on this weekend, our summer concert series will kick off this Saturday (June 3) at the Water Park Gazebo. This free concert will run from 7-9 p.m. It is being sponsored by Cal’s Shade Western, Cal’s Cactus Lanes and Fuson Properties.

The concert series is only a few years old, but we’ve established a tradition of sorts by starting off with a performance by J.J. Aguilar and Last Child. They are a great local band, and we hope you’ll come out and enjoy this free concert. They’ll also be playing for us as part of our “Freedomfest” held on July 1 at the bandshell.

The Charlie Ingraham Band will perform on June 17 and Red Sky will be performing June 24 as part of the Summer Concert Series.

As mentioned yesterday, the annual Car-A-Fair is also going on this Saturday. Vendors include CNG BBQ, My Daddy’s BBQ, Grizzly Bear’s Fudge and Lemonade, Sandra’s Roasted Corn, and coffee and donuts sold by Celebrate Recovery, as well as a wide variety of booths with crafts and items. Organizers have an entire room full of trophies that they plan to give out this year. There’s a lot going on in Carlsbad this weekend, and that will be the case every weekend throughout the summer.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation has re-opened the northern Bataan Memorial Bridge. As of Wednesday, one lane of both the southern and northern portions of the bridge were opened. We’re in contact with the NMDOT to get more information on the final resolution of this state project, but everything certainly seems to be headed in the right direction.

Westbound lanes on the bridge were first closed Aug. 8. 2022, after NMDOT officials observed deterioration to the north side of the bridge. The south side of the bridge (which is an independent structure) was ultimately used for single-lane eastbound and westbound traffic. Construction, which began in December, included lifting the bridge through a process called jack and shore, which allowed construction crews to replace the bridge’s pier. The state also completed several additional repairs on the $1 million project.

We’re certainly glad that these important safety concerns were addressed, but we’re especially pleased with the fact that this construction project appears to be concluding. We know that our residents who live and work in the area are especially happy to see this construction wrapping up.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
