Update 5-28-23

Carlsbad Rotary typically meets once a week at the Stevens Inn. This past week, Carlsbad Rotary held a special outdoor lunch near the Flume.

The purpose was to celebrate the dedication of a new shade structure in the area. This was one of the projects implemented by past Rotary president Khush Ghadiali during his presidency, but there was some delay due to supply chain issues. We were happy to be a part of this effort.

The area around the Flume is one of the nicest spots in Carlsbad, and it also has important historical significance. The spring where Carlsbad got its name is nearby, as is the historic Eddy house. The Flume is also one of the most popular photography spots in Carlsbad, especially for graduation and Prom photos. It’s also a great spot for fishing and kayaking.

This is the second shade structure that Rotary has put in the area. Additionally, a bench was relocated to the area in memory of active Rotary member Mary Walterscheid, who passed away in 2016. Mary was also active in the “Light the Flume” effort, which still draws a lot of attention to this landmark. Mary was one of Carlsbad’s most dedicated philanthropists, and she is greatly missed.

Carlsbad Rotary is an outstanding organization that always does a lot for the community. A few years ago, the organization took on Carlsbad’s annual pancake breakfast, and it’s one of the largest events of the year. The organization also brings in informative speakers every week in order to keep its members up to date. Rotary also participates in trash pickups and numerous other activities. We appreciate past president Khush, current president Ekta Bhakta, and all Rotary members who supported the development of this beautification project near the Flume.   We know these new shade structures will be put to good use.

On Tuesday night, we had a chance to visit with Jim and Mary Lou Otts, who were celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary. As a state elected official, Jim was highly respected and did an outstanding job representing the area. Mary Lou comes from a very distinguished pioneer family. Together, they have remained active in a wide variety of community projects. Up until very recently, Jim was an active participant in our community nuclear task force, for example. We hope they had a very special anniversary, and appreciate everything they’ve done for our community.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
