Update 5-23-23

Carlsbad had a great graduation ceremony and celebration over the weekend. On Friday, students with the Early College High School and then Carlsbad High School held their annual graduation ceremonies. We also offer our congratulations to all of Carlsbad’s families with home school students, or students attending Jefferson Montessori Academy, or private schools.  Students and administrators talked about all of the hardships that this year’s graduating class had to overcome, including the COVID-19 shutdowns of 2020.

At the CHS graduation, valedictorian Cruz Otto and salutatorian Alexander Vasquez both did an excellent job. All five of Carlsbad’s school board members attended both ceremonies, as did Carlsbad’s administrative staff.

Earlier, at the Early College High School graduation, the top five graduates of the program, including valedictorian Justyn Nevarez and salutatorian Syra Jasso, were each given a chance to bring one of their role models on stage. This was an excellent addition to the ceremony. It was also great to see keynote speaker Ricky Garcia visit Carlsbad and talk to students about financial advice.  Carlsbad’s Southeast New Mexico College also recently celebrated its history-making graduation ceremony.

After Friday’s graduation ceremony, students participated in the annual Class Act celebration, which was first organized here by City Councilor Judi Waters. Class Act’s purpose is to make certain that students have a safe, fun graduation. All night activities include a dance, casino games and other special activities. It takes a lot of volunteers to run Class Act, and thank you to everyone who made it possible. Throughout the weekend, the Carlsbad Beach area was filled with families celebrating graduation parties. There was also a lot of positive news over social media as well, as family members shared photos of their recent graduates.  Congratulations to all of Carlsbad’s recent graduates, and best of luck in the future.

If you went by the beach area over the weekend, you may have noticed a new vendor open at the beach area. This new business is called the River Hut, and it will offer boat rentals, aqua cycles, games and snacks, including Blue Bell Ice Cream.  Hours will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, beginning Memorial Day weekend. The River Hut is a local business serving as a subcontractor to the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce.  The Carlsbad Water Park opens this upcoming weekend, and we look forward to having a very busy summer there as well.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
