Update 4-27-23

On Tuesday, members of the Mayor’s Student Advisory Committee participated in their quarterly meeting. The committee is open for grades 6-12, and local principals nominate members. Members had a chance to tour the Hall of Fame at the Carlsbad Museum and offer suggestions. When asked, members picked John Wooten, Becky Thompson, Gary Niblett and Shane Andrews as some of their favorite hall of fame displays.

They were then introduced to Carlsbad City Council. Finally, Judge Collis Johnson and Tammy Carrigan with Carlsbad Municipal Courts offered them a tour. There are a lot of activities going on during this time of year, so we didn’t have everyone present, but the visit was a lot of fun. We’re looking forward to meeting with our Student Advisory board over the summer.

We’re honored to announce a very special retirement from the Eddy County Detention Center. Lieutenant Michael Ingram, who joined the Center in 2002, retired last Friday. Ingram served as interim warden prior to the hiring of Billy Massingill. Ingram was very involved in training at the Eddy County Detention Center, and he was very well respected across the law enforcement community. We wish him the very best and thank Lieutenant Ingram for his service to our community.

Western Commerce Bank has set up a fundraiser at the request of  Carlsbad resident Kayla Aguilar, who was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. Kayla is receiving outstanding treatment, but she is advocating for a blanket warmer and fluid warmer to be purchased for the local treatment clinic. A blanket warmer would help keep patients warm during their visit, and a fluid warmer is commonly used in healthcare facilities. Family members and friends are helping with this fundraiser at Kayla’s request. Please see Western Commerce Bank for additional information.

Congratulations to Carlsbad’s Downtown Lions Club. The organization celebrated its 95th anniversary on April 26.  Carlsbad’s two Lions Clubs – Heights and Downtown – are both outstanding organizations who donate a lot of time to the community.

One of Carlsbad’s biggest events of the year is the annual Car-A-Fair, which is scheduled this year for June 2 and 3 at the Beach Bandshell. Every year, this event draws thousands of participants from around the entire country. There’s a cruise through town on Friday, and a DJ, food court, vendors and kids activities on Saturday. For more information, please contact David Kump at (575) 200-5534 or Steve Angell at (575) 706-0697.

Sincerely, Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
