Update 4-25-23

The Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad has a new CEO. Last week, the club announced that Michelle Martinez has been selected as the club’s new chief executive officer. Carlsbad has a lengthy history of having one of the most active clubs in the entire Boys and Girls Club organization, so we know Michelle will do a great job. Michelle has previously been involved in the Boys & Girls Club as a volunteer, and she is also one of the most active Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. She attended the Club when she was younger, so she has firsthand experience about what the club does for young people. Congratulations to Board President Nate Banks and the entire club on an excellent selection. Special thanks to Assistant Executive Director Nicole Fuentez, for doing an excellent job with continuing to run the program.

A few weeks ago, volunteers hosted a “Tee it Up for Luke” charity golf tournament, in order to benefit a 2-year-old boy who is the son of a City of Carlsbad firefighter. These funds help the family with travel expenses, among other costs. We’re pleased to announce that the tournament, and the silent auction that went with it, raised $18,000. Thanks to everyone who helped put together this special event.

Congratulations to the Cavemen and Cavegirl Tennis Teams on winning the District 4-5A Championships this weekend. Both teams won 5-4 victories over the Hobbs Eagles. Carlsbad now automatically advances to the state tournament, which will be held in Albuquerque on May 5-6. First, however, is the district tournament, which is taking place in Carlsbad this Friday. At the district tournament, players will have a chance to earn the chance to compete in state for individual and doubles ties.

Summer plans are already starting to come together. The list of activities this summer includes the Assistance League of Carlsbad’s 34th annual Ducky Affair, which will be held on June 24 at the Carlsbad Water Park. The Assistance League is renting the water park for free public use that evening, and a local band will be playing at the nearby gazebo. Of course, the biggest thing about the Ducky Affair is the annual chance to win prizes, including a $1,500 grand prize. At this point, the Assistance League is still organizing the event and is looking for a few food truck vendors. Please let us know if you are interested and we’ll get you in touch with volunteers.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
