Update for Wednesday’s Print Edition

Carlsbad High School has a couple “specialty bands” whose members participate in additional activities throughout the year beyond those requiring the full band. One well-known group is Strut, which is the band’s drum corps. You’ll see Strut at many of our local parades. Another great group is the CHS Jazz Band, which is under the direction of Robert Galindo. The jazz band opened for the Carlsbad Community Concert Association’s performance earlier this year, and members participated in the “Cavemen Strong” event in December.

We’re very proud to learn that the Jazz Band earned first place at this past weekend’s JazzFest held at ENMU. Isaiah Galindo was selected as the “most outstanding soloist” and the band’s alto, trumpet and trombone sections won first place as well. Congratulations to the CHS Jazz Band!

Want to share your ideas about how to improve upon the safety of our community? The Carlsbad Community Anti-Drug/Gang Coalition is holding a Community Safety Briefing at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 20 at the Pecos River Village Conference Center. Topics to be discussed will include behavioral health, illegal substances and crime concerns. Local organizations will be there with information on services and programs they have available, both for those in need of assistance and those looking to get involved.

The Coalition is also running a very unique fundraiser right now to raise money for Class Act and increase awareness about the dangers of underage drinking. You may have seen some colorful toilets around town. For more information, please visit carlsbadcoalition.com/potty

The Honor Flight of Southern New Mexico and El Paso has resumed services. The Honor Flight Network program was first conceived by Earl Morse, a private pilot. Honor Flight now offers WWII Veterans, Korean War Veterans and Vietnam Veterans a chance to visit all of those memorials in Washington D.C., as well as a trip to Arlington National Cemetery and a special banquet paying tribute to these men and women. Sponsors donate an “adoption fee” to make this trip possible for veterans. Volunteers called Guardians also assist with the trip.

The Department of Veteran Affairs reports that our nation is losing around 800 World War II veterans a day. Honor Flight of Southern New Mexico and El Paso aims to provide a chance for these veterans to visit the wonderful national memorials set up in tribute to their service. For more information, please contact 1-844-697-1590.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
