Update 4-18-23

One of Carlsbad’s best nights of the year, the annual “Shine Carlsbad,” took place this past Saturday at the Pecos River Village. Shine Carlsbad is described as a prom for people with special needs. Guests are pampered with hair and makeup, or a shoeshine. Then they receive a limousine ride around town and a red carpet treatment when they arrive at the dance, where they are also treated to a photo shoot and a catered meal.

According to the web page, the main goal of the event is to make the participants “see that they are kings and queens every day, because God loves them so much.”

According to organizers, there were 120 guests signed up this year, as well as 170 volunteers. What a great night, and thanks to the many volunteers and sponsors who put this together.  You can help with future events by visiting https://www.shinecarlsbad.com/.

Highlights over the weekend also included the Carlsbad Municipal Golf Course holding its first ever miniature golf tournament. Attendance at the event, which was hosted by the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s Age Friendly Committee, was excellent. It was a beautiful day as children ages 6 through 17 competed for prizes. Golfers received miniature golf or water park passes whenever they hit a hole in one. Congratulations to all of the organizers, sponsors and volunteers. We look forward to sharing the results as they are made available.

Spring is one of the busiest times of year for Carlsbad’s students, and this week’s list of activities includes Occupation Day at the Carlsbad High School on Wednesday. Carlsbad High School students will have a chance to learn more about industries and careers that might interest them. The sessions will consist of life-skills workshops, job opportunities, internship opportunities, military recruitment and motivational speakers. Please encourage your CHS students to make the most of this opportunity.

The event coordinators were the team lead teachers for each academy at the high school – Charlin Hernandez with Health and Human Services Academy, Diamond Morrill with S.T.E.M. Academy, Kevin Zink with Business Academy, and Rhonda Guthals with Arts Academy.

Former Carlsbad standout Trevor Rogers pitched his best game of the year on Friday, striking out seven batters while allowing one run in the Marlins’ 5-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rogers pitched seven innings in the victory, as the Marlins recorded their third straight win.  The Marlins are also celebrating the organization’s 30th anniversary.
