Update 4-2-23

We have a couple updates for you on several City of Carlsbad employees. Our Beautification Coordinator, Mary Garwood, has left her tenure with the City and will now be working for CEHMM. CEHMM plays a very important role in our area because it develops conservation agreements with industries that allows them to be a partner in the conversation process.

Mary joined the City of Carlsbad in 2015 and was probably best known for coordinating the annual Riverblitz cleanup, as well as putting together numerous other cleanup efforts around town. She also coordinated the excellent program where nonprofit groups can hold cleanups as a fundraiser. Mary was the biggest supporter of every single cleanup effort around Carlsbad, and, in this regard, she continued the legacy of striving for beautification created by Wanda Welch and Deanna Taylor. Mary was also an extremely active member of the community, and she developed important partnerships with the BLM, MainStreet, Eddy County and many other organizations. We’ll miss having her as a city employee, but we’re glad to hear that she’s still going to be very involved in Carlsbad.

Our museum director, Dave Morgan, has also retired from the City. Dave joined the City in 2013. During his tenure, the museum underwent numerous changes, including a rebranding, a major restructuring and a development of the Carlsbad Hall of Fame exhibit. Dave has a background in woodworking and construction, so he was always able to take a hands on role in any project at the museum. The recent exhibit by artist Gary Niblett was an outstanding example of what the Carlsbad Museum had to offer under Morgan’s direction. Morgan was also the museum’s representative in the development of the Halagueno Arts Park.

Mary and Dave will both be missed, and we appreciate their service to this community and its citizens.

The Casting Crowns “Healer Tour” was a great hit in Carlsbad. We’ve received so much positive feedback about this band performing in Carlsbad, and we know it was also a big draw for our area. The performance at the civic center also included We Are Messengers and Ben Fuller. We’re very proud to have such a popular Christian act perform in Carlsbad, and we hope they’ll come back. Coming up at the civic center is the Laugh it Up comedy show on April 21 and country artist Tracy Byrd on Oct. 28.  Please visit the city’s civic center webpage for more information.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
