Update 3-28-23

As mentioned recently, the Southeast New Mexico Community Action Senior Citizens Program is re-opening its doors to the Adult Respite Facility. The state-run program, which had been closed since COVID-19 restrictions went into place, is now holding enrollment and will open March 3.

This adult day care provides fun-filled social opportunities for seniors who may require extra care. Seniors participate in activities such as a field trip, arts and crafts and board games. A hot nutritious meal is served each day, along with snacks. Health screenings are also provided on occasion.

If you know of someone who might benefit from this program, please contact Belinda Lopez at (575) 689-7456 or Olga Venegas at (575) 887-0560. Prospective participants will be evaluated prior to enrollment to make sure that the facility can meet their needs. The suggested donation for services is $8 an hour, but no person will be turned away.

Since the closure of the respite center, we have had many residents ask us when it is going to open again, so we’re very excited about this development.

From everything we’ve heard, Carlsbad’s first Gus Macker tournament was an incredibly safe and successful event for thousands of people. We hope to have complete results for you soon, but Carlsbad’s Damian Perez won the tournament’s slam dunk competition. The event would not have been possible without an entire community’s worth of sponsors and volunteers, so a very special thank you to everyone who made this possible.

Special thanks to the members of Carlsbad’s transit department who worked Saturday and Sunday to provide free rides from the Cascades parking lot to the event, as well as to all of the City of Carlsbad employees who assisted with setup and cleanup. Transit provided 222 rides on Saturday and another 60 on Sunday. This really made a big difference.

Eddy County Manager Allen Davis has announced his retirement. Carlsbad and Eddy County have naturally always worked very closely together, but that partnership improved during Davis’ tenure. We were able to work together on major projects such as the loop road to serve all of the citizens of our county. With an extensive background in the oil and gas industry, Davis has also been one of our area’s best representatives in terms of explaining the industry. His explanations of the critical role southeastern New Mexico plays to the nation are better than we’ve seen anywhere, and he has played a critical role to our area in this role, in addition to his role as county manager. We wish Al Davis the very best.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
