Update 3-24-23

Some last minute preparations are being made to set up for Carlsbad’s first ever Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, which will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Lake Carlsbad Beach parking lot. In preparation for this event, the Lake Carlsbad Beach parking lot was closed for non-event use beginning Thursday morning. The lot, which includes the boat launch area, will remain closed through Sunday. Registration for the tournament is going on Friday, and the event begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m.

At the same time as the Gus Macker Tournament, the annual Claire Higgins Tournament will be taking place at the Lake Carlsbad Municipal Tennis Complex. Please be very cautious when driving in this area over the weekend, as there’s going to be a lot going on. The Cascades Parking lot will serve as a primary lot for Gus Macker and for other events going on in the area. In order to assist with this, Carlsbad Municipal Transit will provide rides from the Cascades parking lot to the Gus Macker tournament. Free transit rides will be offered from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from 8 a.m. until approximately 4 p.m. Sunday.

The Gus Macker is going to be a lot of fun. Local rock band Stranded will be performing nearby Saturday night, and there will be food trucks and other activities set up all around the beach area. We imagine that our miniature golf course will also be very popular this weekend. Weather reports for the weekend also seem to be positive. We welcome the many teams from out of town who are visiting Carlsbad this weekend to compete, but of course are cheering for all of our local competitors.

Trevor Rogers Update: The former Carlsbad standout, now Miami Marlin, had a great performance Wednesday in his last trip to the mound during the preseason. Pitching against St. Louis, Rogers struck out four batters, walked one and didn’t allow a single run during five innings. According to media reports, Trevor tried out four different pitches, but mostly went with his fastball and a changeup. Media reports indicated that Trevor looked a lot like he did when he made the All Stars in 2021.

Trevor completed Spring Training with a 5.00 ERA, 17 strikeouts and 3 walks during 18 innings of pitching.  The Marlins will begin their regular season on March 30 in a game against the Mets.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
