Update 2-21-23

It was a great weekend for Carlsbad athletics. Carlsbad’s boys basketball team beat Hobbs on Friday night, 49-32, to earn the top spot in the upcoming district tournament. The Cavemen will host the final game of the tournament next Saturday.

The Cavegirls lost a tough game to Hobbs Friday night, 59-29. Since Carlsbad beat Hobbs earlier this year, that means the two teams will play again Monday in Roswell to decide who has the top seed in the district tournament. Depending on how the district tournament goes, the two teams could wind up playing a fourth time next Saturday as well.

It was also the start of baseball season this week in Carlsbad, with the Cavemen seeking to defend last year’s state title. They opened the season Saturday by hosting a highly-regarded Organ Mountain Team. Carlsbad’s Tristin Thomas, Dylan Salcido and Aden Quintela led the Cavemen to a 6-3 and 8-3 victory. The Cavemen will play El Dorado (El Paso) on Thursday. Carlsbad’s wrestling and swim teams also competed in their state tournament this weekend, and we’ll run those results later this week.

Also this weekend, country band Lonestar, with special guest Wil Banister, played at the civic center Friday. We heard it was a great performance. You can see more about what’s happening at the civic center by visiting https://cityofcarlsbadnm.com/departments/community-development/walter-gerrells-performing-arts-and-exhibition-center/.

We’ve also heard from Carlsbad native John Andrews, who is hosting a conversation with actor F. Murray Abraham at 4 p.m. (EST) on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Murray starred in numerous films, including Amadeus and Scarface.  To make a reservation to watch this online National Arts Club program, please visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/in-conversation-with-f-murray-abraham-registration-526842148047. We appreciate Andrews keeping us in the loop on these opportunities.

We’ve been asked to share a request from resident Ernest Endes related to the dog park.

“The City of Carlsbad has good grace & vision to provide a nice large dog park for pet owners to bring their pets. There are various bag & dump stations & the city maintains their upkeep & the park. Unfortunately, there is a plethora of irresponsible dog owners who are proceeding to ruin the place. They let their dogs dig holes, holes, & more holes (large) with no discipline on their part. I know sometimes they may not see it, but the neglect is so blatant they have to know when most of the digging occurs & do nothing about it. This is so egregious. At times, the city comes out & covers & packs the holes, but, unfortunately, people let their dogs re-dig & dig new ones.”

“Also, there is irresponsibility of owners to picking up droppings. At times I have gone around the whole park & picked up 30-40 bags of old droppings (&each bag has more than one dropping). Then it all builds back up, again. Again, sometimes one does not see their dog drop, but most of the time they do & they just leave it. I appeal to the citizens & visitors to this park to do your park & help maintain in in the shape the city tries to. ”

Thank you for sharing this important message.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
