Update 2-17-23

What are ways we can improve upon literacy in Carlsbad and across New Mexico? Members of the community are invited to participate in a discussion about literacy in Eddy County on March 6 from noon until 1:30 p.m. Special thanks to Carlsbad Municipal Schools for putting this together. You can register to participate by visiting https://carlsbadfoundation.org/literacy/

Shannon Johnson, with the Cal Ripken Foundation, will be the event’s master of ceremonies. Shannon has always been a tremendous friend to Carlsbad and is a strong supporter of education. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Ray Perryman, who will talk about the economic impact of literacy. Dr. Perryman is the President and CEO of an economic research and analysis firm based out of Waco, Texas. He is also the Senior Research Fellow of the University of Texas and serves with the International Institute for Advanced Studies. He has written more than 2,500 trade articles.

The New Mexico Public Education Department will also give a presentation, and there will be a panel discussion including moderator Khush Ghadiali from Devon Energy and panelist Tracee Bentley from the Permian Strategic Partnership. The Carlsbad Community Foundation and a variety of other sponsors are sponsoring this event, but additional donors would be of great assistance. This should be a very informative event, and we hope you’ll participate and register.

There’s a new activity scheduled at the North Mesa Senior Center. “Hatha Yoga with Erin” has been set for every Thursday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. According to the senior center, this is a style of yoga that will build strength, increase flexibility and help you develop relaxation. For more information, please contact the Senior Center at (575) 885-6487. Additionally, both of our senior centers are working with the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce in organizing another Casino Bus Trip. The next one of these popular trips is scheduled for March 10 and will travel to the Inn of the Mountain Gods. For more information, please call JW Sutphin at (505) 239-0342.

While we’ve been focused on getting Carlsbad Miniature Golf open, let’s not forget that the Carlsbad Water Park is an outstanding facility. The water park will open Memorial Day weekend, and we’re expecting another busy year. We’re currently preparing by offering training classes for our lifeguards. In order to be a lifeguard, you need to obtain certification. Training sessions will be held March 25, 26, April 15 and 16, and there will also be an online component. To register, please text Luke Garza at (575) 302-7627.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
