Wednesday afternoon’s earthquake was clearly the biggest news of the day. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 5.3 magnitude earthquake at around 2:30 p.m. centered near Toya, Texas. The quake could be felt for hundreds of miles, and several aftershocks were also reported throughout the day.
Emergency management personnel have checked with Wood, the company monitoring the recently contained brine well cavity at the South Y. There were no significant changes reported to the brine well. There was also no disruption reported at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. There was no loss of utilities reported in or around Carlsbad, and no damage to property was reported. There was an earthquake of a similar magnitude recorded in March of 2021, but Wednesday’s earthquake certainly seemed to have been felt by the most people of any in recent memory.

The Carlsbad High School Swim Team season began last week with their first meet in Hobbs. . There were 19 teams and over 350 swimmers competing in the 2022 Tori Invitational. The Cavemen placed 10th overall.
Senior Gabe Wittmayer placed 3rd in the Boys 100 Yard Breaststroke, with a time of 1:09.87. The Boys 400 Yard Freestyle Relay placed 8th, with Ty Longoria, Mason Dhenin, Andree Bautista and Wittmayer.
The Cavegirls placed 5th overall. They took 2nd place in the Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay and earned a State qualifying time of 2:06.02, featuring: Colette Dhenin (Backstroke); Olivia Jang (Breaststroke); Sophia Corder (Butterfly); and Charlie Martinez (Freestyle).
Other notable swims for the Cavegirls include: Corder, 1st place in the Girls Yard Individual Medley with a state qualifying time of 2:19.95; Jang, 3rd place, Girls 200 Yard IM, 2:31.52; C. Dhenin, 2nd place, Girls 100 Yard Butterfly with a state qualifying time of 1:06.32; C. Dhenin, 4th place, Girls 500 Yard Freestyle with a state qualifying time of 5:47.32; and 5th place in the Girls 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, 4:10.55, featuring: C. Dhenin, Martinez, Jang and Corder. The CHS Swim Team will be in Lovington this Saturday.

Congratulations to the City of Carlsbad’s Director of Municipal Services, Angie Barrios-Testa, who recently received a “Permian Applause” recognition from the Permian Strategic Partnership. Barrios-Testa received this recognition, according to the PSP, because of all of her hard work on the City’s grant programs, including assistance with successful grants for the senior center and with flood relief. This recognition is very well deserved.
