Update 11-17-22

Carlsbad’s basketball season is just around the corner. The CHS boys begin their season on Nov. 21 with a home game against the Eldorado Eagles.  Carlsbad’s girls begin on Nov. 28 in Alamogordo. The winter swim season has already started, and wrestling starts Dec. 2 at a tournament in Rio Rancho.

Last year, the Cavemen basketball team finished with a 23-7 record and a tenth ranking in the state poll. The team’s leading scorer is Damian Perez, who averaged 17 points per game. The Cavemen, who are being coached by John Zumbrun, deliberately organized a very difficult schedule this year, to better prepare them against potential playoff competition.

The Cavegirls are coming off of a 22-8 finish and a sixth place ranking in basketball.  Marianna Sepulveda led the team in scoring last year with an average of 14 points per game. Best of luck to head coach Matt Enloe and the Cavegirls.

Carlsbad’s wrestling team placed sixth last year in state, and five state qualifiers are returning to the team. Marcus Najera placed second last year.  The Cavegirl program has 15 wrestlers this year, including returning state qualifier Danica Medina. Best of luck to the wrestling team and new head coach Mark Pratt. Carlsbad’s swim team will compete in Lovington this weekend, and we look forward to reporting those results.

In football playoffs, Carlsbad district rival Hobbs lost to Volcano Vista, 35-31, in the second round of the playoffs last week. In 5A playoffs, Artesia routed Valley and will now play Deming in the semifinals on Saturday.

The results from this past weekend’s fishing tournament are in. Diegoh Dorado caught the biggest catfish at 8.56 pounds. Gabriel Diaz landed the biggest trout, while Andrew Coleman won a special prize for catching the smallest fish. Chapley Sellers caught the biggest bass at 1.38 pounds. Ramon Sanchez had a great fishing tournament- he caught the fish with the $1,000 tag and the fish with a benchmade knife prize. John Castillo, Cruz Lopez and Mathew Martinez all caught tagged prize fish as well.

This was the fourth annual Fishing Derby in Carlsbad, and several hundred people participated in the fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club. You could spot families parked up and down the river fishing throughout the weekend. Special thanks to organizer J.R. Doporto and a host of sponsors who made it all possible. The Boys & Girls Club, who also had a successful dueling piano fundraiser, had a very busy weekend.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
