Update 11-10-22

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine will be in Carlsbad on Saturday, Nov. 12, to provide free skin cancer screenings. Retired attorney Jeff Diamond first brought this event to Carlsbad though his work with the Shannon J. Shaw Memorial Cancer Fund. Diamond worked very hard to combat skin cancer by providing a wide variety of educational opportunities.  Carlsbad Medical Center has helped bring this opportunity back on track after a two-year hiatus, and we appreciate their support.

This year’s screening will run from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pecos Valley Medical Office Building (2420 W. Pierce St.) Suite 100. No appointment is needed. Our area has a high prevalence of skin cancer cases, so we encourage you to take advantage of this free opportunity. New Mexico also has a severe shortage of dermatologists, and only a few of the 33 we do have in the state live outside of Albuquerque or Santa Fe.

There are big plans going on at Riverside Country Club as well. Riverside is holding a groundbreaking ceremony on Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. The Country Club is in the process of building a new clubhouse and wants to celebrate. This new and improved clubhouse will be a great enhancement for Carlsbad.

The day’s activities include a 9 a.m. Turkey Shoot (golf tournament), the groundbreaking at 3 p.m., a cook-off contest at 4 p.m. and a special music guest at 6 p.m. For more information, please contact the Country Club at (505) 885-4253. Congratulations to Country Club PGA Golf Pro Neil Bhakta, Club President Anthony Foreman and everyone else who has worked hard to develop a plan for this new clubhouse.

Don’t forget that the 4th Annual Fishing Derby will be taking place this Saturday from 6 a.m. until dark and Sunday, from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. This is a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club. Cost is a $10 donation, but participants 12 and under are free. For more information, please contact JR Doporto at (575) 361-9580. Prices include $1,000 for the biggest bass by weight, and free dirt bikes are being given away to kids who participate. Special thanks to the host of sponsors who are helping support this event.

Congratulations to all of the winners of this week’s elections. Reports we’ve received have indicated a very high turnout at many voting locations across Carlsbad – so congratulations to everyone in this community for taking advantage of the right to vote.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
