Update 10-3-22

The first Cavern City Renaissance Festival was reportedly a huge success, with several thousand residents and guests attending the two-day event at the Carlsbad Beach. The group involved with the event’s organization, including Shay Gregory, should be very proud of their effort.

In fact, many of the vendors reported record sales over the weekend. There were pirate shows, dances and combat demonstrations. The organizers are already talking about next year, and we look forward to supporting them as they prepare an even bigger event.

The Beach Bandshell area is staying busy this upcoming weekend as well. Fall-a-Palooza 2022, a free event hosted by local churches, will be taking place this upcoming weekend. This event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event features Carlsbad’s largest display of jumpy houses, numerous games, Bible trivia and other activities.

This weekend will also kick off action at the Carlsbad Community Theatre. Production dates for “D.K. Molinar: The Devious Dentist” will be 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7,8,14 and 15, and Oct. 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students and are available at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.carlsbadnmtheatre.com.

The play is directed by Donia Dunlap.  Assistant Director is Dave Kump.  The cast features Robert Reid, Zeph Roberson, Lori Laughinghouse, Libby Smith, Chason Cooper, Destiny Sounders, and Jill Thompson, including the musical talent of Linda Servold on live piano. Best of luck to the cast and crew of “D.K. Molinar: The Devious Dentist.”

We received a nice email from Carlsbad resident Faith Johnston, who reported a great experience with City of Carlsbad employee JJ Munoz while she was out picking up trash. Faith said JJ was kind and considerate as he stopped to assist with trash pickup. We love hearing great stories about city employees.

It was a big week in Carlsbad football. The Cavemen picked up a 47-37 home win over the Alamogordo Tigers in a Friday night game that changed leads multiple times.  Former Cavemen Taylor Miterko is also having a very successful college career. Miterko is the starting left guard for the #7 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. In high school, Miterko earned first-team All-State honors and was named the top college football prospect in New Mexico. He began seeing a lot of playing time at the Division 1 level last year and is reportedly having a great junior year. Congratulations to Taylor and his family.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
