Eddy County’s fair is next week, and this major event will, as always, take place at the Eddy County Fairgrounds, 3402 S. 13th Street in Artesia. Many Carlsbad and Eddy County youth have been working every day since last year’s fair to prepare for this event.

The fair’s parade is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, with the official opening to follow. Wednesday’s activities include a rabbit, horse, flower and swine show. Thursday’s activities includes the sheep and meat goat show.  Thursday, July 28 will be Faith and Family Night. This is a free event presented by Artesia Faith Baptist Church. Thursday’s entertainment will feature “We Are Messengers” as well as special guest, Katy Nichole.

Friday’s activities include a poultry show, heifer show, market cattle show and pecan contest auction. There will be bull riding at 7:30 p.m. at in the arena.  Aaron Watson will be the fair’s headline act at 9:30 p.m. July 29.

Watson was born in Amarillo, Texas, His 2015 album, The Underdog, reached No. 1 on Top Country Albums in 2015. In 2017, he had his first major radio airplay hit with “Outta Style.”

Saturday’s list of activities includes a chili cook-off, cornhole tournament and the 4-H and FFA Awards presentation. You can find more information at https://www.eddycountyfair.com/. Many of the entries completed by local competitors will be on display all week at the fair’s exhibit hall.  This is a great community event, and we encourage you to attend.

The most recent Shorthorn updates we have: Shorthorn 11U won the state championship with a 9-2 win over Eastdale. Shorthorn 12U beat Eastdale, 5-2, on Wednesday and is playing Eastdale again Thursday in the state championship game. The winner will advance to the Southwest Little League Regional Tournament in Waco, Texas. Best of luck to all of these local teams. Shorthorn 10U and the Junior League also had a competitive performance in the state tournament.

An earthquake was reported near Carlsbad Thursday morning. Reports of the 4.6 magnitude earthquake came in at around 7:30 a.m. from 34 miles south of White’s City.

Don’t forget that the Vintage Cactus Trade Days show is coming up this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the civic center. This popular event is organized by Carlsbad resident Brandy Villareal. It has continued to grow over the past three years.  This event will feature multiple vendors, boutiques and gift shops. Several local food trucks are also very excited about participating.
