Update 7-20-22

There’s a petition circulating around town in support of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant that we hope you’ll consider signing. Copies may be available through the Carlsbad Department of Development and the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, and at several local businesses.

The CDOD has also passed a supporting resolution, and the Chamber is looking to do the same. Specifically, this resolution supports both WIPP and the plan to dispose down-blended plutonium at the underground waste repository. This plutonium meets all of the approved waste acceptance criteria for WIPP and is essentially the same as tons of contact-handled defense transuranic waste that has previously been disposed at WIPP. The National Academy of Sciences has reviewed the plan to dispose of this plutonium at WIPP and recognizes it as the most viable alternative.

A few months ago, a northern New Mexico group opposed to WIPP presented a petition to the governor opposing this plan. Their petition received quite a bit of media response. It is our hope to remind the governor and everyone else that there is also a lot of support for this plan. If there are people new to town who would like more information about WIPP, please let us know how we can help answer any questions you might have.

On Tuesday, we received a special visit from the Boys & Girls Club. Several of the club’s students were participating in a workforce program. We spoke to the students about jobs at the City of Carlsbad and all job opportunities. We were able to provide a tour to the students of city hall, of our Council Chambers and of our museum’s Hall of Fame exhibit. We also explained our job application process and talked about the fact that many of the students will soon be able to apply for employment as lifeguards. Thank you to Ekta Bhakta and everyone at the club for including us in this process.

Carlsbad High School graduate Nolan Perry, who recently donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad through his Gatorade Player of the Year honors, was selected in the 12th round as the 368th overall pick to the Toronto Blue Jays.  Perry has also signed with Texas Tech University. We will keep you posted when a decision is announced.

Our summer concert series is in full swing on Saturday. Please join us at the water park gazebo from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday for music by the extremely talented Charlie Ingraham. Another popular local musical act, Stranded, will be performing at the Shade Saturday night, so there’s plenty of music options in town that night.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
