All Star baseball and softball tournaments are continuing across New Mexico, and Carlsbad players are doing their usual excellent job.
On the softball side, Carlsbad National Little League’s 11U team won first place in in their state tournament. The 10U team finished second. Carlsbad National’s 12U, 14U and 16U teams all won district championships.
Carlsbad National Little League also received some more good news recently. Faith Aragon, who has selected as the Gatorade New Mexico Softball player of the year, selected Carlsbad National as the recipient of her donation choice.
The Gatorade Play It Forward initiative works with the program to empower student-athletes to provide resources to sports organizations in their community. All 60 Gatorade Player of the Year award winners have the opportunity to select a youth sports organization for the $1,000 grant. Congratulation to all of our softball teams.
On the boys’ side, Carlsbad Shorthorn is currently in the middle of a very competitive state All Star tournament in multiple age brackets. Things have been going very well for the boys in all four age categories, as the double elimination tournament continues this week. Most recently, Carlsbad’s 10 and 11 year olds both beat Eastdale, while the 12 year-olds lost in the double elimination tournament. Carlsbad’s Junior boys fell to Mile High.
Carlsbad Hall of Fame member John Andrews, who currently resides in northern New Mexico, has been attending some of Shorthorn’s state tournament games and closely following their successes. Dr. Andrews, who pitched in the Carlsbad Shorthorn Little League’s first game ever, reports being extremely impressed by what he saw. Let’s hope for continued success.

Congratulations as well to Lindsay Garza, who was selected as the 2022 Administrator of the Year by the New Mexico Association of Elementary School Principals. Garza most recently retired as the Principal of Ocotillo Elementary. She was born and raised in Carlsbad, where she spent 27 years in education. She taught kindergarten for 18 years before moving into administration.
We’re also very glad to hear that Garza plans to continue being an educator in Carlsbad. According to the Carlsbad Prep Academy, she is one of the all-star cast of teachers being assembled at this new private school.
