Cavemen, Cavegirls Reach State Finals

Update 5-15-22

The Carlsbad Cavemen held off Hobbs, 2-1, on Friday to reach the state championship 5A baseball final. It was a great game between the district rivals, and a pair of strikeouts in the top of the 7th inning ended the game with the bases loaded. The Cavemen advanced to the championship game on Saturday.

Earlier on Saturday, the Carlsbad Cavegirls beat Alamogordo, 9-7, to reach the championship match in 5A softball. It’s a double elimination tournament, but a Cavegirl win on Saturday would mean the state title. What an exciting week for Carlsbad sports fans.

We were unable to have Saturday’s championship results in time for the deadline for this publication, but we will share them when they are available.

Congratulations as well to the Loving Lady Falcon softball team. Loving’s girls beat Tularosa, 8-6, to finish the season with a 15-0 district and 22-5 record. Loving’s girls have dominated their bracket for a very long time now.

On Thursday, a very well known and respected Carlsbad resident was the victim of a vehicle theft. Unfortunately, there were three dogs in the vehicle, as well as a number of personal possessions. We want residents to know that the Carlsbad Police Department is doing everything to assist with this search, as are other law enforcement agencies across New Mexico and Texas. This search was still going on by late Friday afternoon. There is strong evidence that the individual who took the vehicle was last seen heading east near Amarillo, Texas. Please contact the police department if you have any information that might help with the safe recovery of these dogs and the vehicle.

We have received word that Eddy County 4-H is bringing home another state title. The Eddy County 4-H Shotgun team of Nathan Lewis, Dillon Lopez, William Heath and Mason Cartwright won the 4-H Shotgun Championship. Heath was also high point individual, whole Lewis and Lopez tied for third. Lewis then won the tiebreaker. Jacob Dowdy claimed the 7th high individual in another shoot while Mason Cartwright came home 9th in the final shoot off.

Eddy County’s Team 2 claimed 5th high team overall as well with Dowdy, Jacob Griffin, Brylee Holder and Savannah Tupper representing Eddy County very well. The state champion team will represent New Mexico at the National Shooting Sports Championship in Grand Island, Nebraska, next month.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
