Update 5-12-22

It’s looking like another extremely busy weekend in Carlsbad. Track, baseball and softball are currently in the middle of state championship battles, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

One of this weekend’s biggest events will be the “Spring Into Arts” Art in the Park celebration taking place Saturday at the Halagueno Arts Park (101 S. Halagueno St.) This event will begin at 11 a.m., with activities including a sculpture installation (at noon) by Barrett DeBusk and a 1 p.m. Chautauqua performance by Ralph Estes.

From 3-6 p.m., the Carlsbad Museum will host an exhibit celebration and artist reception. Also from 3-6 p.m., Carlsbad Public Library will host a Harry Potter Book Night. There will be workshops and art demonstrations all day as well. We are especially excited about seeing the Four Elements artwork by Wren Prather-Stroud.

The Halagueno Arts Park is one of this community’s greatest treasures. Thanks again to the Fine Arts Acquisition and Vetting Committee for their many years of hard work on this project. Committee members are Julia Heaton, Carla Dungan, Linda Pruit, Judy Murray, Wren Prather-Stroud, Cindy Elkins, Diane Joop, KC Cass, Angie Testa, Dave Morgan, Sarah Jones, Mary Garwood, Katherine Davis and Jameson Lucas.

What has been so special about the development of this park is that we’ve continued to see improvements over the years. We invite you to come out this weekend to see the latest developments. Thank you to the New Mexico School for the Arts and New Mexico Humanities Council for supporting this effort.

Here are a few more activities taking place this weekend.

  • The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s “Brews on the Pecos” is taking place on Saturday from 3-9 p.m. at the Pecos River Conference Center. For more information, visit https://www.carlsbadchamber.com/copy-of-events. Thank you to AR Foreman Construction for sponsoring this event, and so many others.
  • Carlsbad High School’s play, “the Wizard of Oz” is taking place at 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are sold at the door at the CHS Little Theater. We’ve heard great things about this production.
  • Cheer & Tumble Athletics is holding its annual End-of-Year Show-Off on Saturday at the Beach Bandshell from 3-7 p.m. Cheer teams perform at 4:30 p.m. and there is a $5 cash admission.
  • Potter’s House is holding a concert near the beach parking lot from 4:30-9 p.m. on Saturday.
  • Cheryl’s School of Dance is holding its annual spring recital this weekend as well – “Dance for the Stars and Stripes” at the PR Leyva Auditorium. Just Dance held its recital last week.

It’s a very busy time in Carlsbad.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
