Update 5-9-22

Both the Carlsbad Cavemen and Carlsbad Cavegirls have advanced to the second round of the state playoffs in baseball and softball, respectively.

A 7-3 win over Sandia propelled the Cavegirls to the second round, where they will play No. 9 seed Piedra Vista at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cleveland High School. Carlsbad district rivals Hobbs and Roswell both remain in the tournament as well.

The Carlsbad Cavemen advanced to the next round off of 12-2 and 4-0 wins over Eldorado. Next up for the Cavemen is Farmington, who beat Rio Grande in the first round. During the 12-2 win, Mack Mabrey hit three home runs and a double. As the starting pitcher, he went six innings and tallied ten strikeouts.

The quarterfinal series will begin at 1 p.m. May 12 at Santa Ana Star Field at UNM. Congratulations again to Coach Tom Forni- Carlsbad High School’s field was named after him during last Friday’s game.

On Friday, the Cavegirl tennis team lost a close (5-4) meet against Las Cruces Centennial High School in the state duals. Katharine Waters and Amelia Ananins both won their singles and doubles matches. Amber Easley also won in singles.

The state track tournament will be held on May 13. We will provide more information on local high school sports and other competitions as it becomes available this week. There will be a state sendoff for softball and baseball at 9 a.m. Wednesday and track at 10 a.m. Thursday.

As a reminder, baseball and softball tickets from this point on are available through the New Mexico Activities Association. You can access tickets at https://gofan.co/app/school/NMAA, For more information, please visit the NMAA website at www.nmact.org

We hope everyone in Carlsbad had a wonderful Mother’s Day. Moms across Carlsbad likely spent their Sundays as busy as ever, helping their children with homework and school projects, and helping to prepare for playoff games and dance competitions. We hope they also had some time to relax.

Thanks again to everyone who helped with or sponsored this year’s Prayer Breakfast, especially this year’s planning committee.  Co-chairs were Pastor Kevin Pence (First Baptist Church), and Gabe Rubio (Oasis Church). Members were Pastor Brad Coates (Carlsbad First Assembly), Dr. Judy Lim, Pastor Destry McDonald (Landmark Baptist Church), Sr. Pastor Scott Meador (First United Methodist Church) and Father Juan Carlos Ramirez(San Jose Roman Catholic Church).  We received a lot of great feedback and we’re looking forward to next year.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
