Update 3-3-22

Carlsbad’s biggest cleanup event of the year, Riverblitz, is scheduled for this Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m. Materials such as gloves, water and bags will be provided, as well as T-shirts, to all volunteers. Riverblitz participants will meet that morning at the Riverwalk Recreation Center, 400 Riverwalk Drive, and then head out to a variety of locations in or near Carlsbad. For more information, please contact Mary Garwood at (575) 302-7665. This is the 23rd Riverblitz event, and it is being organized by Keep Carlsbad Beautiful. Last year’s volunteers collected 10.1 tons of trash. If you can’t make this Riverblitz, we assure you there will be other cleanup activities in the future.

There’s a lot going on with the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s Age Friendly Communities Council, which is chaired by Jeannie Watson. The Council recently hosted a Valentine’s Day dance. The Council is also sponsoring a senior casino bus trip to Ruidoso on March 11 and a visit to Rattlesnake Springs and Washington Ranch on March 25. Local sponsors are helping make these trips affordable, and sign-up information will be posted very soon. Jeannie and her committee have done a great job preserving the legacy of Janell Whitlock, who worked so hard to make Carlsbad become the first city in New Mexico to receive an Age Friendly designation.

Carlsbad has an excellent historical society. While the organization normally focuses on local history, it is taking advantage of a local expert next week to discuss a global topic. Dr. Jonathan Pohl will be presenting a program on Soviet Russian policy toward non-Russians from 1923 to 1956. This meeting will begin at 7 p.m. March 7 in the Carlsbad Museum. Dr. Pohl is a history teacher at P.R. Leyva, but his field of expertise is actually related to the former Soviet Union. This is certainly a topic relevant to present times.

You may have recently read an article about Carlsbad Fire Department employee Tony Souza, who is also part of the Way-Way Off Broadway Theatre Company in Roswell. Tony, his wife, and their two children are all part of a “Sound of Music” production taking place this week and next at the ENMU-R Performing Arts Center in Roswell. Times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tony is the assistant director and set designer. For ticket information, please visit www.waywayoffbroadway.com or call 1-866-967-8167.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
