Update 2-9-22

Through a partnership with Chevron, the Carlsbad Community Foundation has recently awarded grants to 17 local nonprofit organizations with a total value of more than $65,000. These funds come through the Chevron Catalyst Fund, which was established in 2016.

According to a press release, this year’s grant awards will provide school clothes to needy children, repair a shelter for victims of domestic violence, teach adults basic reading and English language skills, provide educational outreach about wildlife, put books in the hands of children, feed local senior citizens, and much more.

Those organizations awarded a grant included:  Assistance League of Carlsbad, Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad, Carlsbad Battered Families Shelter, Carlsbad Community Anti-Drug/Gang Coalition, Carlsbad Community Theater, Carlsbad Lifehouse, Inc., Carlsbad Literacy Program, Carlsbad MainStreet, Cavern City Child Advocacy Center, Desert Willow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Eddy County, Eddy County CASA, Friends of the Carlsbad Public Library, Noah’s Ark Animal Refuge, Inc., Permian Basin Counseling & Guidance, Southeast New Mexico Community Action Corporation, and Southeastern New Mexico Historical Society. Chevron also recently made a major donation to the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship fund. Congratulations to all of these well-deserving recipients.

The United Way of Eddy County is also helping with a donation in support of a local resident. The woman and her son are in need due to a recent house fire. According to the flyer, the fundraiser effort is looking for sheets, bedding, towels and a microwave, as well as help transporting a mobile home and electrician services. Congratulations to Eddy County CASA on holding its Light of Hope Gala on Feb. 5. This successful fundraiser helped support one of Carlsbad’s best nonprofits. CASA does a great job helping make sure that children get a voice.  CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. Volunteers help make sure that kids in foster care are in a safe environment. Several local groups are holding Valentine’s Day fundraisers, and that list includes a Feb. 12 Valentine’s Dinner sponsored by the Apostolic Church (1309 W. Tansil). Tickets are $50 a couple and the event includes giveaways and valet parking. For more information, please check out the church’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CarlsbadACJC. Don’t forget that the Age Friendly Communities Council is also holding a Valentine’s Day dance for seniors on Feb. 12 as well.
