Update 2-4-22

We believe we’ve moved past the worst of this week’s cold weather. There was an issue at a local apartment complex with a water line busting. The City was ready to help, but the complex itself also did an excellent job of taking care of the situation and keeping everyone safe. Please continue to help direct people to the Community of Hope or Carlsbad Transitional Housing shelters through Saturday.

As it (hopefully) warms up over the weekend, here are a few things going on in our community:

  • The Carlsbad Public Library has a new newsletter out. The monthly newsletter – “The Patron” comes out once a month. This edition features an article noting that the library isn’t charging fines for overdue materials. If you have overdue books, please bring them back, however, so that other people can enjoy these materials as well. There’s an excellent list of upcoming library events such as the teen art class on Feb. 9 and Mother Goose activities for children. You can be put on the distribution list for the newsletter by emailing: cplinfo@cityofcarlsbadnm.com. You can also view it by visiting https://cityofcarlsbadnm.com/departments/carlsbad-public-library/ and clicking on the “Library Events” button.
  • Carlsbad Community Theatre has a play that begins Feb. 11. “Love Letters” a play by A.R. Gurney will open on Feb. 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale at The Blue House, Angee’s Flowers, Treasured Moments, and at the door. The theater is located at 4713 National Parks Highway. The play is directed by Dianne Joop and Barbara Hodgson, and it stars D’Ann Read and Mark Schinnerer.
  • Cal’s Shade Western is hosting a fundraiser Feb. 11 from 4-7 p.m. This is to raise money to buy a custom wheelchair for a local resident. The fundraiser will include a car show, calendars featuring local models, and a visit by the characters from Paw Patrol.
  • The Chamber of Commerce’s Age Friendly Committee is hosting a 50+ Valentine’s Day Dance on Feb. 12 from 6-10 p.m. This will include a DJ, 50s and 60’s music with a light show, an excellent meal, cash bar and a crowning of the 2022 King and Queen. Tickets are $50 and are available at the Chamber and at both senior centers.
  • If you are reading this on Friday – don’t forget that Carlsbad is playing Hobbs in a district basketball showdown on Friday night. The Cavemen and Cavegirls are both going into these games with perfect records in district. The Cavegirls play at Hobbs and the boys are at home. Also, due to changes in COVID-19 numbers, there is no longer a lowered capacity limit at the gym- so head up to the high school to enjoy a great basketball game.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
