Carlsbad resident and World War II veteran Bill Fuson is turning 97 this year on Jan. 20. We’ve been told that Bill won’t be having a party this year, but please send cards to Bill Fuson, PO Box 1372, Carlsbd NM 88220 wishing Bill a very happy birthday. Bill really enjoyed all the cards he received last year wishing him a happy birthday. Bill enlisted in the US Army at age 19 and spent most of his time in the Philippines. He retired from PCA as a welder in the pipe shop, and he is a deacon at Cavern Baptist Church. His hobbies are fishing, gardening and hunting. Thank you Bill for your service, and Happy Birthday!

Roadwork on Mermod Street is expected to begin this week. This will be a microseal project that should take about two weeks to complete. Mermod will go down to one lane during this time period. Please obey all posted signs. Upcoming road projects will be the Callaway Drive low water crossing and Radio Boulevard.

COVID-19 update- There were more than 273 vaccinations distributed on Monday at the civic center clinic. This included booster shots and the original vaccination. There will not be a vaccination clinic at the center next Monday, due to the holiday, but the clinic will resume the following week. Student testing at Edison Elementary School has remained extremely busy, and we expect this trend will continue for some time. Thank you to the Carlsbad Municipal Schools employees who are working very long hours this week providing tests and sending out notifications.
City of Carlsbad offices will also be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 17), but we will be supporting the annual march and ceremony held that day. Solid Waste pickup will continue at the normal schedule during the MLK Jr. holiday.
Please join us for the march at 10:30 a.m. at the Eddy County Courthouse or meet us at the ceremony and lunch, which will follow at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
Congratulations to the winners of this year’s essay/art competition, which challenged local middle students to address “How would MLK Measure the Meaning of Life in the Midst of a Pandemic.” Dezi Florez received an honorable mention for her entry, while Olivia Long received third place. Kevin Parraz received second place honors, while Campbell Malone Foster took first place. Thank you to all of our students who participated!
