Update 11-10-21

Miami Marlin and former Carlsbad Cavemen Trevor Rogers was named a finalist for the National League’s Rookie of the Year, with the winner being announced Nov. 15.

Cardinals outfielder Dylan Carson and Reds second baseman Jonathan India are also up for the honor, as voted on by the Baseball Writer’s Association. Rogers had an outstanding April and May and received Rookie of the Month honors and an All-Star bid, but family health issues kept him off the mound for nearly a month. He rebounded in his final two starts with a 1.74 ERA and 16 strikeouts.

Trevor isn’t the only Carlsbad athlete making waves. On Wednesday, soccer star Alexa Dugan signed a letter of intent to play for West Texas A&M. Dugan was also selected to participate in the state’s All-Star game this upcoming weekend. She’s also the previous Gatorade Player of the Year for New Mexico.

Also on Wednesday, senior baseball star Nolan Perry signed a letter of intent to play with Texas Tech University. Last year, the pitcher throw one no-hitter in a 10-0 win over Goddard and was then part of a no-hitting team in a 12-0 win over Clovis. Texas Tech has an exceptional program and we know Perry will do a great job.

Please keep up with some of the grants being made available to small businesses. The State of New Mexico is providing $200 million in grant funding to small businesses and nonprofits. These grants are tied to job creation, and the deadline to apply is Dec. 7, 2021. For more information, please visit www.nmfinance.com/recovery. This is the final round of the Business Grant Recovery Program.

We hope you are having an excellent Veterans Day week. As mentioned in yesterday’s update, a parade and ceremony are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 11. The parade will run from the Carlsbad Municipal Schools building to the Carlsbad Veterans Memorial Park, where a short ceremony will follow.

Also this week, the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department has announced that on Nov. 11, New Mexico resident who are currently serving or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and their immediate families have access to their state parks for free day-use and overnight camping. Thanks as well to the Carlsbad Elks Lodge, who is serving a free breakfast on Nov. 11 to all U.S. military veterans and their spouses between 6-9 a.m.  Please have an excellent Veterans Day – and don’t forget to thank a veteran for his or her service.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
