Update 11-4-21

Abbey Dugan scored in the second half of Wednesday night’s playoff game on a pass from her sister, Alexa, to lead the Carlsbad Cavegirls to a 1-0 soccer playoff semifinal win over the La Cueva Bears. Goalkkeeper Corrine Bradford had several outstanding saves in the game, which was played in front of a full house on the home side.  This s win means the Cavegirls will play Cibola for the state title on Friday in Albuquerque. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m at the University of New Mexico Soccer Complex, and the audio will be broadcast through local social media outlets.

Congratulations to all of the Cavegirls: Grace Aragon, Alexa Dugan, Brayle Mullins, Hannah Martinez, Jessica Munro, Allie Myers, Aislenn Whitzel, Abbey Dugan, Faith Aragon, Marley Suggs, Kirstyn Guevara, Trinity Griego, Analicia Hernandez, Alisa Bernarl, Dominique Chacon, Briley Brantley, Cassie Bielstein, Rylee Whiteaker, Rosalia Rubio, Johnna Aragon, and Ariyana Rogers and manager Hayden Brose, as well as coaches Misty Long, K. K. Gonsalez, and Cat Romero.

The Cibola Cougars are 16-2-1 and beat the Hobbs Eagles, 3-1. Best of luck to the Carlsbad Cavegirls in their bid for a repeat state title.

If you ever want to see a partnership between private industry and a government agency that really works well, go no further than the one formed between the local Bureau of Land Management and Plains Pipeline. Last march, the wooden walkway at the Cottonwood Day Use Area was tragically destroyed in a fire. This week, employees with the BLM and Plains have devoted themselves toward restoring this walkway, which overlooks one of Eddy County’s most scenic locations. The finished product is going to be even nicer than before. Plains has stepped up to assist the BLM and other local organizations time and time again. We have many other wonderful energy companies who volunteer time and resources to help, but Plains is certainly a great example. Special thanks to Lindsay Dalton with Plains and Tracy Hughes with the BLM for the key role they play in this partnership.

We are so fortunate to have an active arts community in Carlsbad, and we need to make sure that isn’t taken for granted. This weekend, Carlsbad Community Theatre will have performances of “Dearly Beloved” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 and 6 and 2 p.m. Nov. 7. The play, intended for mature audiences, is directed by Lawanda Scholl and will take place at 4713 National Parks Highway.  Please come out and enjoy this wonderful local theater production.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
