Update 11-3-21

Congratulations to all of the winners of Tuesday’s election, and thank you to everyone who ran for office and to those who are finishing their terms. We’re all very proud of Carlsbad, and we look forward to working together to support this growing community.

For Carlsbad City Council, Edward Rodriguez ran uncontested and was re-elected in District 1; Jeff Forrest was elected to City Council in District 2, and we also want to thank the incumbent, Leo Estrada, for his service to Carlsbad. Karla Hamel Niemeier will be the new City Councilor on District 3. She’s filling a position previously occupied by Jason Shirley, who decided not to run. Thank you to Jason for all of his dedication, and thank to former Magistrate Judge Dick Van Dyk for running. Finally, Mark Walterscheid won an uncontested election in District 4.

Congratulations to new school board members Tom Hollis, Tiffany Shirley and Clancey McMillan on their successful elections. Hollis and Shirley ran uncontested while McMillan defeated two opponents.

Thank you to Ron Singleton, David Shoup and Simon Rubio for their dedicated service on behalf of Carlsbad’s children. It has been an especially challenging year for our schools, and all of your extra hard work is appreciated. Thank you to candidate Jason Burns for running for office as well.  Congratulations to Carlsbad Municipal Schools as well for the successful passing of the mil levy renewal. This is great news for the future of Carlsbad’s schools.

Carlsbad’s college will have a brand new board. Congratulations to board members Mark Cage, Bill Murrill, Tiffany Frintz, Sarah Bowman and Ned Elkins on their victories Tuesday night. Thank you as well to Doris Bruton Carleton, David Rogers, Fran McCarthy and Norbert Rempe for their interest in running, as well as Joy James-Foster, who was still on the ballot despite suspending her campaign. We hope all of these men and women will remain highly involved in our college. Our five board members will soon draw straws to determine how long their terms will be in order to have staggered elections at the college.

Kristin Pope and Charles Goodwin were both elected to the Soil and Water Conservation Board following uncontested bids.

Finally, thank you to the Eddy County Clerk’s Office and all of their volunteers for doing an excellent job with the 2021 election. All new officials will take their oaths of office in early January. We look forward to working with them.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
