Update 11-1-21

From everything we’ve heard, Carlsbad had a fun and safe Halloween weekend celebration.

This included MainStreet’s downtown festival on Friday and Creative Carlsbad’s Bat Festival on Saturday, and the many sponsors who made both events possible.  Of course, numerous churches and businesses also held trunk-or-treats and fall festival celebrations, as did our first responders.  Door to door trick-or-treating took place on Sunday. Some neighborhoods reported huge turnouts while other neighborhoods hardly had any visitors. Thank you to all of the volunteers on the Hometown Holidays page who helped get out information about safe options throughout the weekend. They even organized candy drop-offs for families where children were too sick to go out. Mostly, thanks to all motorists for being extra careful throughout the Halloween weekend.

In sports, the Carlsbad Cavegirl varsity soccer team has another playoff game on Wednesday. This is following a 1-0 win over Volcano Vista on Saturday. The Cavegirls have the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will host No. 3. seed Rio Rancho at 5:30 p.m. A tailgate party, sponsored by Affinity Real Estate Services, has been set up to begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday on the home side parking lot of Ralph Bowyer Cavemen Stadium. Please come out and support our local defending state champions.

Our Carlsbad Cavemen varsity football team also earned a playoff seed at the #11 spot. They will play in Albuquerque against Volcano Vista at 7 p.m. Friday. The Cavegirl volleyball team is in the district tournament and is playing at Hobbs on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Finally, our cross-country team saw three girls and its boys team qualify for the upcoming state tournament.

The City of Carlsbad has received a $25,000 grant from the Outdoor Recreation Division of the Economic Development Department. These funds are going to be used to install shade structures at our beautiful Halagueno Arts Park. This project will help increase opportunities for outdoor recreation, especially during warm weather months. Thank you to Angie Barrios Testa, Julia Heaton and the many volunteers who work so hard at the Halagueno Arts Park. This competitive grant process awarded $506,736 to 25 organizations across New Mexico. Carlsbad was the only community in Southeastern New Mexico to receive a grant.

Don’t forget to vote Nov. 2. Eligible voters can use any of the following convenient locations, regardless of where you live: St. Peter Lutheran Church, Lakeview Christian Home, VFW, Hillcrest Baptist Church, JMA, the Eddy County Clerk’s Office, the Eddy County Fire Service Center and the Otis Community Center. All centers will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
