Update 10-23-21

One Carlsbad family will be celebrating a very important double anniversary in just a few weeks. Pac and Bobbie Nance will be celebrating their 70th anniversary on Nov. 17. Their daughter, Leta Wright, and her husband, Rickie, will be celebrating their 50th anniversary on the same day. Pac and Bobbie were married on Nov. 17, 1951 and Rickie and Leta were married on Nov. 17, 1951. There are five generations of family members right now, and a dual anniversary is planned in November. Congratulation to the Nances and to the Wrights on their upcoming milestones.

Another one of our most important events is also on the horizon – Veteran’s Day. We have something very special planned for our Veterans Day event this year and will be meeting next week to discuss the details. This will include a parade and ceremony at the Carlsbad Memorial Veterans Park.

Many organizations set up booths at the energy summit, including the Carlsbad Community Foundation. The Foundation is awarding three $100 mini-grants to local nonprofit organizations recommended by individuals whose names were drawn.

The mini-grants will be awarded in honor of Denise Boyea (Jonah’s House), Sky Soto (Carlsbad Foundation’s Dr. Neldea Slate for SENMC Fund), and Debralynn Soza (Carlsbad Community of Hope Center). The purpose of the Grantmaker-For-A-Day Promotion was to demonstrate to summit attendees the challenge of grantmaking. Speaking of charitable events – thank you to everyone who participated in the C-Hill cleanup on Saturday. We will continue to provide community cleanup opportunities to help Keep Carlsbad Beautiful.

Congratulations to Airgas, a new company in Carlsbad that celebrated its grand opening on Friday. The company is located at 401 Energy Avenue and offers specialists for welding, safety, construction and industrial gases.

One important sports update- the Carlsbad Cavegirl varsity soccer team lost to Hobbs, 3-1, but still won the district title. The Cavegirls will be in the playoffs for certain, but seeding done over the weekend will determine whether or not they have a first round bye or host a home game on Thursday. We will know more on Sunday.

This upcoming week, COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters will be offered from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Walter Gerrells Performing Arts Center (Exhibition Center), 4012 National Parks Hwy in Carlsbad on Oct. 26. There will not be a vaccination clinic on Friday. Moderna and Pfizer are both available. To register, please visit https://cvvaccine.nmhealth.org/my-registration.html

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
