Update:  10-19-21

Voters are being asked to consider the HB 33 Mill Levy during the Nov. 2 election. This is a vote to provide the School District with funds to maintain and improve buildings and purchase equipment. This is not a new tax – the property tax rates on this mill levy will remain the same as where they are now. Passage of the Mill Levy, which has been in place for many years, will provide the district with nearly $4 million between now and 2027 to make improvements and acquire equipment.

A “Committee for Carlsbad Kids” has been re-formed, and members of the committee are encouraging local voters to continue with this Mill Levy. This Committee successfully has supported such Mill Levies in the past. The Committee will be providing information on flyers and putting out content on its social media page. You don’t have to be a property owner or have children attending public schools to vote on this issue.

I also support voting for this this Mill Levy. In the past, these funds have been used to fund projects such as parking lots, sidewalks and fencing improvements, which are all clearly important in protecting the safety of our children. Funds have also been used for air conditioning and heating, and for adding playgrounds and practice fields.

If this Levy is renewed, plans include district-wide lighting upgrades, ADA ramps, security camera upgrades and roof coating and replacement. We support making certain that the children of Carlsbad are provided with the best possible facilities and resources. We certainly support making certain that our teachers have the resources they need to do their jobs.

Voter registration closes on Oct. 30. This year, Carlsbad voters will be asked to choose among candidates for school board, city council and the new college board, as well as the Carlsbad Soil and Water District. We encourage everyone to review these candidates carefully before voting. Please consider voting “Yes” on the HB 33 Mill Levy.

Over this past few months, Carlsbad MainStreet and the Pearl of the Pecos have held a special “Third Thursday,” event – basically a larger version of the weekly Farmer’s Market. The Farmer’s Market season will come to a conclusion this week with the final event – a Third Thursday celebration from 5:30-7:30 p.m. downtown, featuring live music by Gleewood. There will also be food trucks and vendors downtown. Congratulations to everyone who worked hard week after week to have this event be a success.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
