Update 9-8-21

Election Update: We have been informed that Dr. Joy James-Foster, who was running for Southeast New Mexico College’s District 3, has decided to suspend her campaign. Dr. James-Foster didn’t make the deadline for formally withdrawing, but will not be participating in a campaign. She writes that she will continue to look for ways to serve the new college as a parent and advocate. She has a son in the Early College High School and supports building a relationship between ECHS and the college. She also supports efforts to develop robotics and technology courses. We thank Dr. James-Foster for her interest in the community and look forward to working with her in the future.

As a reminder, there are school board, college board and city council positions up for consideration in the November election. Several organizations are planning candidate forums for October, and we will keep you informed.

Our monsoon season has extended for quite a bit longer than normal this summer. While we’ve welcomed the rains, they have led to a significant weed problem. The City of Carlsbad is working hard to address this issue on our end, but we also need your help with clearing out weeds in the alley and along the curb. If you have any large waste items, please take them to the front curb for grappler pickup. You can schedule grappler pickup by calling 311 or (575) 887-1200 or visiting www.egovlink.com/carlsbad. You can also take items to our convenience station on Plaza Street.

The City of Carlsbad’s Shooting Range near Happy Valley will be closed from Sept. 21 through Sept. 24 in order to conduct biological surveys on behalf of the New Mexico Army National Guard. We apologize for this brief closure of this popular shooting range.

As announced in this week’s Eddy County Commission meeting, the recent approval by the New Mexico Department of Transportation of $5.7 million in funding for the Southeast Loop project will make a major improvement in the lives of Carlsbad resident. Completion of this loop project, as well as the loop project in southwest Carlsbad, will provide a full bypass around town- diverting large trucks away from the crowded downtown area. This is a great victory for our residents, and we appreciate the NMDOT’s approval.

This week’s Crimestoppers is a report of fraud and forgery. A Carlsbad resident reported that her property was signed over to an individual who had forged her signature. Crimestoppers is looking for any information related to the suspect involved in this incident. Please call (575) 887-1888 or visit eddycounycriumestoppers.com if you have any tips or information. Crimestoppers offers rewards of up to $4,000 for information related to the suspect involved in an incident.

Carlsbad has a very busy weekend coming up.  On top of all of Saturday’s activities, First Baptist Church is hosting a Car Show & Shine from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. All makes and models are welcome. Please check it out!
