Update 7-23-21

There has been an outpouring of community support for Rocky Armendarez, the young Shorthorn player who passed away earlier this week. This includes a car wash planned Saturday at 7 a.m. at 1101 W. Lea St. (Bud Board Smoke Shop) and at 8 a.m. Sunday at 501 N. Canal St. (Western Commerce Bank). Proceeds will go to funeral expenses. A Gofundme account has been set up in his memory and additional plans to provide support are being developed. Thank you all for doing what you can to help this grieving family.

COVID-19 update: COVID numbers in Eddy County have continued to remain higher throughout the week than they have been over the past few months. On Thursday, the NM Department of Health reported 13 new cases in Eddy County and, sadly, two COVID-19 related deaths. This included a male in his 50s and a female in her 60s who had underlying conditions, according to the DOH.  We offer our sincere condolences to both families and we pray for the continued improvement of those who have recently been hospitalized. There were also 27 new positive COVID-19 cases reported on Wednesday. Carlsbad Medical Center  reports that the majority of the recent COVID-19 patients the hospital has treated have been from people who are unvaccinated, though there have been a small number of instances of local people who are vaccinated contracting COVID-19. Please remain alert to ongoing developments. COVID-19 vaccinations are being offered from 8:30 to 11 a.m. on Mondays at the Carlsbad Public Health Office, 1306 W. Stevens St. For more information, please call (575) 885-4191.

On a more upbeat note, the Carlsbad Police Department and Carlsbad Public Library have partnered to organize a fun upcoming event. “Coffee With a Cop,” will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 28 at the Carlsbad Public Library, 101 S. Halagueno St. This is a chance to chat with members of our police department. Thank you to Starbucks and the United Way of Eddy County for helping sponsor this event. The Carlsbad Community Anti-Drug/Gang Coalition is also conducting a fundraiser to purchase, train and equip two new K9 officers. For more information, please visit carlsbadcoalition.com/K9.

We’ve heard a lot of great things about Ethan Cole, who will be performing this Saturday from 7-9 p.m. Ethan has a strong following in Carlsbad and we’re looking forward to a great turnout at the water park gazebo.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
