Update 7-9-21

A brief update on the Avalon program, which is a residential treatment facility for women with children. The Carlsbad LifeHouse runs the program, and outpatient counseling began there more than a month ago. We were pleased to learn this morning that the Mesquite Street facility now has several families participating. The kids reportedly love their new playground equipment.

It took several years to get this program up and running. Thanks again to Jeff Diamond, Woods Houghton, Rep. Cathrynn Brown, Senator Gay Kernan, Kyle Marksteiner and everyone who worked so hard for so long. It was truly an example of everyone coming together. Thank you to everyone with the LifeHouse program as well. You are making a difference in the lives of families. Avalon has a program where organizations can sponsor individual rooms where the women who are seeking rehabilitation are staying with their families. For more information, please call Philip Huston at 725-5552 ext. 700. We have also heard that the Foundry Home, a facility for teenagers, has also been doing an excellent job serving those in need. While there’s a lot of work left, it has been a great year in terms of adding treatment programs in Carlsbad.

Yesterday, we discussed the news that the Carlsbad Police Department’s K-9’s  will no longer be able to work in Carlsbad, due to changes in marijuana legislation. Some good news comes from the Carlsbad Community Anti-Drug/Gang Coalition, who is conducting a fundraiser to restore our program here. The Coalition has set a goal of raising $50,000 to support the program, and has kicked in the first $15,000 in support of the campaign. The fundraising goal covers the cost for two dogs, plus future care and equipment. All donations are tax-deductible, as the Coalition is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization. Any amount of donation is welcome – as they want it to be a community project.
