Update 6-21-1

Our first sand volleyball tournament at the beach was a success. Special thanks to Steve Garza and Orlando Moreno for their extra hard work organizing the event, which served as a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. The tournament’s first place winner was “Here for D Pizza” while the “Geek Squad” took second. We also had food vendors and a special visit from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.

The Boys & Girls Club fundraiser was also a success over the weekend. Thank you to Ekta Bhakta, David Beaty, Nathan Banks and everyone with the club who helped raise about $30,000 to support this local organization.

The Carlsbad Disc Golf Club is hosting a Disc Golf Tournament at the course this upcoming weekend beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday. Our wonderful disc golf course begins at Martin Luther King Jr. Park and wraps around the Lower Tansil area.

This is also the final week for high school springs sports. Carlsbad participated in the state golf tournament on Monday. The state tennis tournament has recently concluded.

The Cavegirls have the No. 3 seed in the varsity softball tournament. They host Rio Rancho at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a single elimination game. The Cavemen baseball team has the No. 7 seed. They’ll play Hobbs in Hobbs at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The winners will advance to the semifinals on Thursday with the higher seed hosting. The Loving Lady Falcons also have the No. 3 seed in their bracket and played Monday, while both Artesia teams are in the 4A tournament as well.

The state track meet begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at UNM. We wish Coach Kent Hitchens and everyone the very best. When we think about how things were last year, it sure is great seeing such a busy sports schedule. Best of luck to all of the young men and women competing this week.

On the arts and culture side of things, we had some great performances during Karaoke Night as part of our summer concert series this past Saturday at the new gazebo by the Carlsbad Water Park. Thanks to DJ Malory Anaya and everyone who performed. Cal’s Shade Western also had a great fundraiser concert over the weekend held in support of several local individuals.

Our entertainer this upcoming week will be a country band Red Sky, who will perform from 7-9 p.m. June 26 at the gazebo outside of the Carlsbad Water Park.  These summer concerts are all free, thanks to a donation by Brandon Chandler, and we look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
